LIVING WITH AUTISM 

 The Bexley Autism Advisory Service, go into schools to advise how best to support your child/young person in the classroom and wider learning environment.

The team in Bexley are very experienced and offer a course to parents of children on the Spectrum living in Bexley.

The members of the Autism Advisory Team who deliver the course are:

  • Tracy McDonald

Who is the Workshop for?
  • Parents of school age children, who have recently been diagnosed with Autism, wishing to find out more about this confusing and complex condition
    • Living with Autism 1  is for age 4/5yrs (at school) to 8yrs = Reception to Year 4
    • Living with Autism 2 is for age 9-14yrs = Year 5-8
    • Living with Autism 3 is for age 14-17yrs = Year 8-11
The course will help you....
  • have a clearer understanding of the key difficulties associated with the autism spectrum.
  • gain insight into why autistic children behave as they do and where they most need help.
  • discuss and develop strategies that can be used to help communication, social understanding and behaviour.
  • meet parents of children with similar issues.
The course covers:

Week 1
  • Introductions, tell us about your child with autism and what you would like to gain from the course.
  • Introduction to what is Autism
Week 2
  • Autism and Communication
  • Understanding Theory of Mind and other theories
  • Thinking about how Autism affects your child.
Week 3
  • Autism and Sensory Processing
  • Identifying your child's sensory needs - could this explain some of his/her behaviours?
  • Meeting your child's sensory needs
Week 4
  • How to help
  • Visual support and structure
  • Supporting the need for structure and predictability
Week 5
  • Anxiety in Autism/managing behaviour
    • Iceberg
    • preventing problems/developing daily routines
    • introducing specific strategies to manage anxiety eg. 5 point scale, Social Stories, Comic Strip Conversations, Green bands.
Week 6
  • Understanding anxiety/managing Behaviours 2
  • More on specific strategies
  • Addressing Fears and Phobias
  • Problem solving/trouble shooting.

How is the course delivered?
Due to Covid - the course may be delivered face to face or virtually - you will be advised when invited to attend.

When is the course available?
You are asked to complete the form below - giving all information requested. A member of the Autism Advisory Service will then contact you to advise the next available date to meet your needs.

Is there a cost to attend the course?

There is usually a small charge towards costs of approx. £25 per attender.
